Gear Up for a Texas-Tough Install
Building a fence in the Dallas-Fort Worth area requires more than just a hammer and a box of nails. Between the rock-hard Blackland clay and the precision needed for 100-foot string lines, having the right specialized tools can save you two days of labor and a week of back pain.
At Fence Supply Inc., we’ve categorized this list into the “Must-Haves” for every project and the “Pro-Rentals” that make sense for larger properties in Forney, Wylie, or Rockwall.
1. Digging & Foundation Tools
In North Texas, the “dig” is the hardest part of the job. Don’t settle for lightweight garden shovels.
- Heavy-Duty Post Hole Digger: Look for fiberglass handles; they won’t snap when prying against heavy clay or roots.
- Digging Bar (San Angelo Bar): A 15-lb steel bar used to break up “caliche” (white rock) and hard-packed clay at the bottom of the hole.
- Tamping Tool: To pack the soil and gravel around your post tightly.
- Wheelbarrow: For mixing concrete “wet” (the professional method) rather than dry-bagging.
2. Layout & Alignment Tools
A fence that is 1 inch off at the start can be 1 foot off by the time you reach the back corner.
- Braided Mason’s Line: Use high-visibility neon colors. Braided nylon doesn’t sag like twisted twine.
- Line Level: A small level that clips onto your string to ensure your rails stay horizontal on uneven ground.
- Post Level: A “wrap-around” level that rubber-bands to your steel posts, allowing you to check “plumb” from two angles simultaneously.
- 100-foot Open Reel Tape Measure: Standard 25-foot tapes are too short for accurate perimeter layouts.
3. Framing & Assembly Tools
Once the posts are set, the assembly of the “skeleton” begins.
- Impact Driver: For driving the self-tapping screws into your Wood-to-Steel brackets.
- Pneumatic Fence Nailer: If you are installing more than 50 feet of fence, do not hand-nail. Rent or buy a coil nailer designed for 1-7/8″ stainless steel nails.
- Air Compressor & 100′ Hose: Ensure your compressor can maintain 90–110 PSI for consistent nail depth.
- Speed Square: Essential for ensuring your 2×4 rails are cut at a perfect 90° angle.
4. Specialized Safety Gear
- Hearing Protection: Essential if using a pneumatic nailer or gas-powered auger.
- Impact-Resistant Gloves: To protect your hands while handling rough-cut #1 Western Red Cedar.
- Steel-Toed Boots: Heavy steel posts and 80-lb bags of concrete are unforgiving on toes.
5. The “Pro-Rental” List (For Big Jobs)
If you are fencing an acre or more in Kaufman or Collin County, these rentals will pay for themselves in hours:
- One-Man or Two-Man Gas Auger: Turns a 20-minute manual dig into a 2-minute power dig.
- “Dingo” or Skid Steer with Auger Attachment: If you have more than 40 holes to dig in dry summer clay, this is a lifesaver.
- Porta-Band Saw: For quickly trimming the tops of your galvanized steel posts to a uniform height once the fence is framed.
